Massage is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy and is a system of stroking, pressing and kneading different areas of the body to relieve pain, relax, stimulate, and tone the body. Massage does much more than create a pleasant sensation on the skin, it also works on the soft tissues (the muscles, tendons, and ligaments) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects those muscles just under the skin, its benefits may also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly even the organs themselves. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system (which runs parallel to the circulatory system), improving the elimination of waste throughout the body.

Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue, effecting a change in the accompanying connective tissue and muscular structures. This is done by kneading, stroking, and stretching the muscles of one’s body.

Degrees of pressure vary, depending on the type of massage. Kneading actions enhance circulation, while long gentle strokes communicate calmness as well as flushing toxins out through the lymphatic system.

Using the palm of your hand or a flattened fist, apply pressure gently to the spine, working your way up the back of the neck. Once you reach the top of the body, lightly stroke the back from top to bottom in one large motion.

Regular full body massage is an excellent way to fight off tensions. Full body massage stimulates the endorphin production and promotes relaxation.

Therapeutic massage can be used to promote general well-being and enhance self-esteem, while boosting the circulatory and immune systems to benefit blood pressure, circulation, muscle tone, digestion, and skin tone. It has been incorporated into many health systems, and different massage techniques have been developed and integrated into various complementary therapies.

Body massage helps release stress and tension in our bodies by increasing oxygen flow and blood circulation in the body. Excessive unresolved tension and stress in our daily lives could cause continuous muscular tension. This type of mental tension or stress diminishes the flow of oxygen and blood to the muscles and organs causing pains and aches, feelings of fatigue, symptomatic heaviness, tightness of muscles and stiffness. This can even increase the chance of strains and injuries. Tension creates a tendency for a build up of toxins in the body, and reduces the flow of the more subtle energy or life force (Prana or Chi). Muscular stress also deforms the skeletal anatomy, which further compounds present problems and develops new ones.

The most important tool for massage is aromatherapy oil which should be heated at a room temperature then it is soothing to the body. Having a relaxed environment is among the keys to producing a conducive environment for massage to take place. We have to remember that muscles should be massaged not the skin. We should not put pressure on the skin too much because it is harmful for the skin tissues. The main aim is to be relaxed but not to bring an environment of discomfort. When doing a message it is very important to know the key areas in the body which include the neck, back, thighs, legs, hands and the shoulders.
