Belching or burping is also medically referred as eructation or ructus. Essentially it is a process of releasing gas from the digestive tract through the mouth. A typical odor or sound may also accompany the process of gas release. Belching is a common universal phenomenon and not limited to few people with any specific disorder. Infants to older adults belch or burp to expel air that has been swallowed in excess. Belching relieves the abdomen of discomfort caused due to the excess air.

Unconscious swallowing of excess air can cause belching. So make an effort to swallow less. The causes for belching mentioned above should be avoided.

Individuals will burp due to the fact that they have swallowed air when they eat. The reason why many people swallow air is because they are simply consuming their foods and beverages too quickly. When you are eating and drinking, make sure that you take your time, don't eat or drink extremely fast, especially when you're eating foods that would have a unpleasing odor if you were to burp (such as Chinese food or Fritos). Also, when you drink carbonated beverages, such as beer or soda, your stomach will actually release the gas that is being produced directly from these drinks. If you don't want to burp while on a date, try drinking tea or some other non-carbonated beverage.

Although hyper secretion of hydrochloric acid and reflux of gastric acid are the primary reasons for hyperacidity and heartburn respectively, following are some other causes of hyperacidity and heartburn. Not eating on time, eating fried and spicy food regularly, Stress, anxiety and Insomnia, Obesity, Pregnancy, Excessive smoking, drinking excessive alcohol, Wearing tight clothes.

One of the important home remedies for belching is Lemon. Drink a cup of water mixed with two tea spoons of lemon juice and small quantity of apple cider vinegar before starting meals. It smoothens the digestive process and prevents acids and unwanted gases formation.

Relax for relief. "Work to reduce your anxiety level," recommends Dr. Talley. "Sometimes you're swallowing air because you're anxious." Among the best stress relievers are regular exercise, meditation and soothing activities such as taking a hot bath.

Belching is not the simple act that many people think it is. Belching requires the coordination of several activities. The larynx must be closed-off so that any liquid or food that might return with the air from the stomach won't get into the lungs. This is accomplished by voluntarily raising the larynx as is done when swallowing. Raising the larynx also relaxes the upper esophageal sphincter so that air can pass more easily from the esophagus into the throat.

Peppermint is a widely used herb for both medicinal and culinary purposes. Peppermint tea has long been used in treating children’s digestive problems such as colic, flatulence, and upset stomach. The oil of peppermint is used routinely in Europe as a spasmolytic, carminative, and cholagogue, with its most prevalent use in Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Some people have difficulty digesting certain foods completely. This can lead to partially digested food passing from the small intestines to the colon. There are a large number of bacteria in the colon that will readily "digest" the food further and produce gases in the process. Foods that contain certain sugars that are very difficult for most people to digest include the well-known gas-forming foods such as baked beans, lima beans and lentils. Most people also have difficulty properly digesting commonly added sweeteners such as fructose and sorbitol.
