Itching may be caused by a skin disorder or by a disease that affects the whole body (systemic disease). Skin disorders that cause severe itching include infestations with parasites (such as scabies, mites, or lice), insect bites, hives, atopic dermatitis, and allergic dermatitis and contact dermatitis. These disorders usually also produce a rash. Systemic diseases that can cause itching include liver disease, kidney failure, lymphomas, leukemias and other blood disorders, and, occasionally, thyroid disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Skin itching is a peculiar or uneasy irritation of the skin causing a desire to scratch the affected area. It is a common problem for many people. Skin itching has a specific medical term "pruritus". Everyone constantly sees his or her family doctor. In 3% of cases the reason for the visit is skin itching. It is considered to be a distressing symptom. Unfortunately quite often no cause of itching can be exactly identified. Usually they range from very simple to complex. But it is evident that dry skin itching can be often seen that's why it's pretty important to be aware about possible skin itching treatment.
Itching is so common one would think it is well understood. To the contrary, itching is not well understood at all. There isn’t even a good definition of itching. The working definition of itching from a standard dermatology textbook is, “a sensation that causes a desire to scratch.”
The seeds of the butea have excellent effects in controlling itching caused due to a variety of skin diseases such as ringworm, scabies and eczema. It can also cure boils, pimples and swellings that itch. For better results, these seeds are ground and mixed with lemon juice and used as an external application on the affected part.
Holy basil leaves are very effective in the treatment of itching due to ringworm. Its properties have also been found in other kinds of itching.
Vinegar extracted from apple too can be added to the bath tub. This too helps in soothing the effected skin. This is one of the important home remedies for itching. Similarly, add cornstarch, oatmeal, baking soda to the bath tub. All this give fast relief from itching and sooths the effected area.
Bath with a little peppermint or yellow dock. It is an effective remedy to get rid of itching.
Wrap 1 cup of oatmeal in a cotton cloth and boil as you would to cook it. Use this as a sponge and bathe in tepid water without soap.
For itching of any cause, bathing should be kept brief and preferably in cool or lukewarm water with very little or no soap. The skin should be patted dry gently rather than rubbed vigorously. Many people with itching benefit from an over-the-counter moisturizing cream applied right after bathing. The moisturizer should be odorless and colorless, because additives that provide color or scent may irritate the skin and may even cause itching. Fingernails, especially children's, should be kept short to minimize abrasions from scratching.
Specific treatment of itching depends on the underlying condition that causes it. In general, itchy skin should be treated very gently. While scratching may temporarily ease the itch, in the long run scratching just makes it worse. In addition, scratching can lead to an endless cycle of itch—scratch—more itching.
