As this country faces an economical recession, many have aborted the idea of taking that yearly vacation. The images of basking in the sunshine on miles of sandy beaches have been reduced to the travel section of the local newspaper. While it’s true that the U.S. dollar isn’t what it once was, neither is the idea that some vacation spots are out of reach. Hawaii, for one, has been on my list of places to visit for a very long time, and like the rest of the country, these islands are reducing their prices to get people to come on over. So, armed with my desire to visit and my disbelief that you can’t get a good deal to Hawaii, I set out to find just that…I’ll call it my “Travel Scavenger Hunt” – what I found was a bit unbelievable in itself.

Hawaii offers a mixture of adventure, eco-tourism, sun and sand, breathtaking scenery and an overall "Zen" feeling. From the relaxation and tranquility of Kauai, the volcanoes and remoteness of the "Big Island", Hawaii, the tourist attractions and natural beauty of Maui to the more ‘fast paced’ action Oahu, the Hawaiian islands can be 4 different vacations in one.

Family vacations have always been a cornerstone of my adolescence. I remember packing into my father’s 1975 Chevy Impala and making that 50 mile drive from Boston to the beaches of Cape Cod. Is it possible to stay in Hawaii for less then two trips to the gas station? Believe it or else, I found a steal in Big Island. The Kona Coast Resort is practically giving away villa accommodations. $88 a night settles you in this 21-acre tropical garden with the panoramic backdrop of the Kona Coast. Adjacent golf course (Kona Country Club), Children’s pool and playground and a ton more things to do is all you’ll need to make your Hawaiian Vacation one the whole family will treasure.

Kauai, the oldest of the main islands, along with being 5,148 feet above sea level, it averages 460 inches of rainfall a year; thus being one of the greenest spots on earth. If you enjoy hiking through canyons and mountains along with viewing some of the most scenic waterfalls anywhere in the world, this sure is the place. The Sheraton Kauai Resort, a deluxe resort, is now only $199 (I did my home work; this is over 50% off the regular rate!). This oceanfront resort, ideally located on Kauai's famous Poipu Beach, immerses you in the serene beauty of Hawaii’s oldest island.

Because of the close proximity of all these islands, it might spark your interest to visit more then one island on your vacation to Hawaii. Each island gives you a completely different flavor and experience. Oahu (known to most as Waikiki, its main tourist area), is the main "city" of the Hawaiian Islands. In Oahu, you can take the kids to learn about the details of December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked prompting the United States to enter World War II. Created by lava flowing into the ocean and exploding, the "Big Island" of Hawaii is a once in a lifetime viewing. I found a deal for $899 including air from Los Angeles (a bit more from other cities), three nights in Waikiki and three nights in the Big Island.
