Herniated discs are very common in the lumbar (lower) spine because it supports more pressure than the thoracic (middle) or cervical (upper) parts of the spine.A herniated lumbar disc produces sciatica (the sciatic nerve in the lumbar spine region connects with your legs). Herniated discs are common back injuries. Herniated disc disease is due to a change in the structure of the normal disc. Herniated discs may produce intense back pain but sometimes do not produce any symptoms at all. Those with damaged discs and spinal joints, the source of the pain may be strained back muscles.
Back pain, neck pain, backache, stiff neck, whiplash, arthritis, sciatica, sprain, or shoulder pain, is diagnosed as originating from a herniated disc and categorized as degenerative disk disease; and it is often misdiagnosed as well.
