Air travel is forever on the increase and an astounding number of us wish to fly with our cats . For some time now families have elected to take their family pet on holidays while preferring to leave them at home when taking a vacation abroad or when flying . As flights becomes cheaper the thought of taking our pet with us seems a possibility .
Pet Air Travel and the Rules and Regulations
While it may have been common, years ago , for airlines to allow pets to be sat on a passengers knee during air travel it is sadly very rarely the case today . This is due to the the dramatically increased security rules now enforced by the governments or airlines . Also pet air travel can be rather difficult as a pet can occasionally become irritable or distressed so much that it becomes a bit of a nuisance and certainly dangerously difficult to control .
Even though any pets or other small animals are these days confined to the cargo hold some caring airlines will allow passengers to attend the animal being put onto and taken off the aeroplane. However it is crucial that, purchasing your tickets you discuss the matter with the airline.
Other Important Considerations
1. The Pet Box
It is most incredibly important that you choose a pet container of the correct type, weight and size for the creature that will be kept in it for the duration of the flight. There should always be sufficient extra room for the pet to be able to move about easily all of the time. The longer the duration of the flight the larger the amount of excess room needed.
2. Security Issues of Pet Air Travel
Alarmingly all flights carry the risk of loss or damage to luggage. However great care is taken, by the handlers, of animals but it is possible minimize the risk further by a few simple actions. Of course your pet carrier should be clearly labeled but you should ensure that it is attached correctly and contains as much information as possible, outbound destination, home address, your contact details plus the contact details of somebody else incase the airline is not able to contact yourself directly. It is also a good idea to fix such a label to the interior of the pet box and you should also fit an identification tag to your pet with a close fitting collar (if possible).
Electronic tagging is also a great idea but get this done as soon as possible by visiting your vet. You should talk with your vet, at the earliest opportunity, your planned journey as it is he who will be most suited to give sound advice. By letting the vet know your planned destination he will be able to read up on any precautions, such as inoculations, or any restrictions so that you can be fully prepared.
By reading and following the above pet air travel tips you will be equipping yourself with important facts that will help increase the safety and comfort of your pet during the trip. I would strongly advise that you take the time to read as many similar articles, and speak to as many people, as possible just to make certain that everything has been considered.
