Most of us realise that games such as online bingo are essentially purely based on luck. But what is this mystifying thing called luck? Is it something you are born with or something you pick up along the way? Psychologist Richard Wiseman has spent the last eight years scientifically exploring the nature of luck and came to a few interesting conclusions.
After conducting a plethora of interviews and hundreds of experiments, Wiseman now claims that he's got it figured out. Luck isn't due to kismet, karma, or coincidence, he claims. Instead, lucky people, without even knowing it - think and act in ways that create good fortune in their lives. Lucky people have just as much misfortune in their lives as normal people do but approach it in a different way.
The major characteristic of lucky individuals is their focus, which differs greatly from those who claim that they are persistently unlucky. Lucky people remember good things that happen to them, forget about the bad, avoid negative people and brush away any negative thoughts that might wander over their way. People who play online bingo, for instance, would stand a much better chance of winning if they expect good fortune to befall them.
There exists quite a few myths about luck that have to be cleared up before you can proceed on your merry way towards good fortune. These are:
1. Good luck is purely the result of hard work and determination. In actual fact success is based on smart decisions, which is not the same as working your fingers to the bone. While you have your nose firmly attached to the grindstone you may be missing out on some excellent opportunities that could potentially have taken you further than intensive labour. Being constantly preoccupied with work could result in a narrow focus and passive acceptance of more hard work.
2. Good luck cannot be harnessed, you have to let it do its thing. You can influence the seeming randomness of the phenomenon of luck by being an active participant in your life. Focus on ways of making your dreams a reality instead of obsessing over whether or not it is possible for you to achieve your goals. Banish the term ‘what if’ from your vocabulary and convince yourself that it WILL happen for you.
3. To improve your luck, you need to be in the know. Actually, knowing people is not even the half of it. You can know every single influential person on this planet and it wouldn’t do you one bit of good if you are scared of pursuing opportunities. Knowing someone is one thing, letting your thoughts be known and taking risks is quite another.
4. You have to blow your own horn in order to be lucky. Not necessarily. You could actually offend a lot of people going around like that. Rub enough people the wrong way and you’ll lose out on valuable resources, help and ideas – promptly lowering your luck score. What you want to go for is ‘gentle persistence’. In this way you’ll come across as assertive, instead of aggressive.
5. Good luck is just good timing. Being in the right place at the right time does not need to be a twist of fate. All people have the option to step in when opportunity comes a-knocking. You can elect to include certain activities, people and places in your life. The better your choices and the more accepting you are, the more likely ‘good timing’ will become part of your repertoire.
So there you have it – a whole bunch of things you can do to improve your luck. So, take a deep breath, believe in yourself and who knows, next time you switch on the computer to participate in a few online bingo games your luck might have improved dramatically.
