Sleeping problems or trouble sleeping are a common complaint of people living with arthritis, fibromyalgia, and other rheumatic conditions. The combination of arthritis pain and sleep problems is often a two-way street. Poor quality of sleep and waking pain can create a vicious cycle affecting mood and fatigue levels..

Symptoms

40% adults are suffering from insomnia as per the National Center for Sleep Disorders. Chronic sleep disorder problem leads to a lowered immune system, irritability, lack of concentration and daytime sleepiness. People with insomnia often suffer from diseases like diabetes, hypertension, obesity and memory loss.

The main symptom of such a problem would be an extremely quiet sleeper. I'm sure you've heard people tell you that they snore, but I've actually been told by someone that they're extremely quiet and that I shouldn't assume they're dead. Since this is a serious problem, you have to go see a doctor.

Narcolepsy: One of the more serious and dangerous of the sleep disorders; those who suffer from Narcolepsy may fall asleep while performing regular activities such as talking or driving. It is characterized by an uncontrollable urge to sleep regardless of how much rest you may have gotten the night before.

Causes:

Causes of sleep disorders are varied and range from serious neurological problems to simple nightmares. Sleep disorder means any difference in the normal sleep pattern that can be sleeplessness, oversleep or intermittent sleep behaviors. Persistent sleep disorder is considered to be a problem since it affects the daily living pattern and can lead to severe impairments in body and mind. Sleep disorders can be categorized into dysomnias, parasomnias and others, based on the symptoms of the sleep disorder.

Sleep disorders stem from a variety of causes including physical pain such as back pain, pain from a recent injury, neck pain, and headaches. Stress and anxiety can also be leading causes of sleep disorders. Hormonal changes due to pregnancy, the onset of menopause, or menstruation can also be factors that interfere with normal sleep. The side effects of various medications can lead to sleep disorders as can some medical conditions such as sciatica and endocrine imbalances. Environmental noise and distractions can also be culprits in stealing your sleep.

Sleep Disorder Treatments

There are natural, alternative treatments to lessen the effect of sleep disorders. Diet and nutrition may help to alleviate sleep disorders, or perhaps herbs and herbal supplements may do the trick. Exercise, relaxation, and meditation may also help. Or a combination of techniques may work to alleviate the symptoms of a sleep disorder.
