Launching a boat can be either peaceful or crazy or a variety of the two. Stress levels run high when launching a boat and a variety of mishaps can happen. Nothing is better than being able to launch without a lot of people around. However, this is rarely the case since many boat launches are busy. So the next time you need to launch your boat consider the following tips to have a smooth launch so you can get to enjoy your time on the water.

Doing a little bit of research can help a lot if it is your first time launching a boat. Talk with local fishermen; shop owners or guides about the local launch ramps. Find out about any fees or the best time to launch a boat. Getting this type of information can go a long way to prepare you for your first boat launch. You should also make sure you get directions so you don't spend a large portion of your day trying to find the ramp.

Next you need to make sure you are prepared with the right equipment to get you in and out of the water both quickly and safely. Make sure your trailer is in working order with good lights, adequately inflated tires and a proper winch and strap to secure your boat. If any of these items fail you will have big trouble launching your boat.

As you prepare to launch you boat you need to spend some time on preparation. Proper preparation is key to a smooth boat launch. Make use of the areas that are designated for pre and post launch activities. Even if the launch is empty never use the actual ramp for these activities. It is bad etiquette to clog the launch ramp.

Be sure to walk to the ramp first and make sure it is suitable for your trailer and boat. If you have a vehicle with low horsepower then you don't want to use a steep gravel ramp. If the weather conditions are too bad then a ramp may become too dangerous to use.

To prepare your boat you want to remove the tarp and secure all straps. Load any gear you need so you don't have to carry equipment. Make sure boat plugs are secure and that the keys are in the console. Check your gas and disconnect the wiring connecting the trailer. Now you are ready to launch your boat.

If you are using a partner then be sure to go over the launch process before you actually begin. If your partner is doing this for the first time then be sure they know how to brace themselves for the weight of the boat with the bowline. You don't want your partner to be pulled into the water by the force of the boat. You can also choose to launch your boat with someone in it so the engine can be started the moment its in the water and you can make room for the next boater. This is good for those who have a boat in working condition.
