Pet beds provided for your special animal companion are an important part of making sure the pet is well cared for. There are several characteristics that are important in selecting a pet bed, but the premier factor should be consistency. The pet caring owner will choose carefully, since most pets do not adapt well to constant change of their sleeping quarters. Don't keep changing pet beds in the name of fashion.
* The size of the pet bed is probably the first characteristic that should be reviewed when selecting a sleeping zone for your pet. The pet should not have to curl up to fit in the bed. A dog should be able to lie on its side with legs straightened in order for the bed to be large enough. The pet may very well curl up into a smaller space, but forcing the curled position can be as uncomfortable as sleeping in a too short bed for the human owner.
* The caring pet owner will make sure that the animal has a bed that is heated if the animal must sleep in colder climates. A cooler bed is important in hot and humid climates. The animal is subject to extremes of heat and cold, just as the owner is. Allowance for temperature modification is important to keep the pet healthy. In some pet beds, the sleeping area is closed in which helps to control the temperature as well as providing the pet with privacy and security for sleeping.
* The pet beds should definitely be treated so that they are flea and tick resistant.
The dog or cat bed that is infested with fleas will infest the pet and can re-infest the pet even if it is wearing a flea collar or is protected with anti flea treatment. Fleas and similar parasites are not only uncomfortable for your pet, they can be dangerous, even deadly to the health of the pet. Choose a pet bed that has a cover that can be laundered or cleaned in order to reduce the build up of fleas and mites. Dust and dirt is another thing that can be managed through regular laundering or cleaning.
* The caring pet owner will make certain that pet beds are free of dyes and perfumes. A perfume sprayed on the pets sleeping quarters may smell good to the owner, but it can be very disturbing to the pet whose sense of smell is so much more sensitive than that of the owner. Some pets develop skin allergies because of the irritating substances found in perfumes and sprays. The caring owner would be better off to avoid sprays, perfumes and similar products around their pets. Be careful about using scented laundry products as well, since they can leave a residue on the pet's sensitive skin.
Some pets will refuse the best pet beds to sleep with the owner, but in this instance, the owner may not sleep comfortably so both the pet and the owner should have their own bed for health and restful sleep.
