As the days grow longer, so do the thoughts of taking the family on a long over due vacation. Understandably, the state of the economy might have some families thinking that taking a trip this year is just not in their budgets – and for a lot of us, that is the reality. What may have constituted a vacation, say 10 years ago, is no where near what it is today – or what it should be. This countries strength has always been the ability to ‘get back to basics’ even at the most trying of times.

Trips to far off areas are as foreign to most of us, as are the cultures found there. More people are more conscious of their spending habits, and as such, have lessened their need for a vacation – but not their want. There are places where one can bask in the sun, enjoy a relaxing round of golf (depending on how you play) or pampering themselves with an amazing spa treatment. Everyone knows that times aren’t what they used to be – even the people in the vacation business.

Sales are popping up all over the place. Newspapers, TV, radio, internet – its impossible not to drive down any highway and not see a billboard advertising a nicer place then where you are. I have always had a less then stellar approach to finding vacation deals. I often would sit in front of my computer, spark it up, and start browsing the overwhelming amount of travel related websites and have at it. About the 3rd or 4th hour I become very annoyed and do one of two things (1) turn off the computer or (2) make some over the top decision that I ultimately regret.

The purpose of vacationing is to escape, if only for a little while, your current existence and for a short time experience what its like to be someone different. Whether your into all-inclusive spots where the only decision you make is whether or not to have the Mai Tai or the Mojito for your afternoon cocktail or cruising the great blue waters where your next destination is somewhere in the unknown, travel is a part of so many people’s lives that its hard to think that something as arbitrary as a current recession would put a halt on things.

That’s when you look for places closer to home. The United States surrounds you with treasures of history, culture, sites and sounds that are very hard pressed to find anywhere else. Orlando, Colorado, Las Vegas, California are some of the best places to travel to. No matter where you live in the US, there is a spot that you can go and enjoy your time away from it all; and still be close to home where you don’t need to battle sea sickness or home sickness. Personally, I truly enjoy these adventures known as ‘staycations’. It helps me to unwind and at the same time become more appreciative of the land we live in.

Vacation time is here. Family, friends, romantic retreats, whatever your reason is for leaving things on the back burner there is no need to look to far to have far out fun. Domestic vacations might not be a new thing, but with the changing times, it sure is sensible one that is making a comeback!
