"City Of Angels" is a classic boy meets girl story with a twist which poses an obvious problem for the development of their relationship. Since the hero, Seth, is an Angel, he is normally not even visible let alone capable of participating in the normal physical and emotional aspects of a relationship.
However, visibility seems to be only a small problem which Seth is willing and able to overcome, leading him into closer bonding with the woman who has attracted his attention.
Starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan as the protagonists, Seth and Maggie, this film is an American remake of a successful earlier film by a German film director, Wim Wenders. The English language, American version is directed by Brad Silberling and is set in Los Angeles, which appears as truly a "city of angels".
Underlying the obvious romantic theme and the tension of what appear to insuperable problems, is the notion of free will as the characters are driven to make a choice - Maggie has to choose Seth and his appealing qualities in preference to the human surgeon who wants to marry her; Seth has to choose to become human if there is to be any sort of relationship other than a passing, deeply felt, friendship.
Key elements of this movie involve the characters exploring the possibility of taking their friendship further, questioning how deep their feelings run and whether the risk should be taken to choose each other.
In Seth's case, the risks are immense as he would be required to give up his angelic powers, including eternal life and being impervious to harm. Maggie is risking a safe, secure and available relationship, that many women would eagerly embrace, for one that is far less certain and which could leave her unmarried and alone.
The two are obviously attracted but their differences are pulling them apart and the audience shares their emotional turmoil.
This movie has a tightly focused love story - there is no strong subplot to distract the viewers attention, as with the impending sinking of a doomed ship ("Titanic"), the bombing of Pearl Harbor ("Pearl Harbor"), or the conniving, greedy friend of "Ghost" who murders the husband and tries to harm his wife. With "City of Angels", one or both characters are constantly on the screen and what affects them singly also affects their developing relationship.
One of the most memorable and romantic scenes to be found in movies appears when Seth is asked whether he regrets his decision. His answer will make you melt.
