The Arkansas Razorbacks have found themselves in a precarious situation.

Although carrying a 13 11 overall record, they have fallen to 1 10 in SEC conference. The contest against the South Carolina Gamecocks took place at Colonial Life Arena, on February 21st,where South Carolina won at home, 82 78 in overtime.

Jason Henry led the game, with a double double 27 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Other key players for Arkansas were Rotnei Clarke who sank 14, Courtney Fortson with 12 and Michael Washington, the second player with a double double at 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Hogs had a 46 29 rebound advantage, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the 25 turnovers. They were down for most of the first half, only holding a 1 point lead after Michael Sanchez scored a jumper about six minutes in. 11 seconds later, Evaldas Baniulis sank a three pointer, and South Carolina dominated, leading by up to 11 points, until the intercession where the Gamecocks lead 30 26.

The second half, Arkansas didn’t fare much better. South Carolina held the lead until 11 minutes left in the second half for the tie at 41 41. Rotnei Clarke brought them into the lead as he sank a three pointer. For the next 10 minutes the Hogs fought hard, almost winning in regulation until a rebound and tip in from Dominque Archie with only 31 seconds left gained the Gamecocks an extra five minutes.

“Tonight is something that hasn’t happened to us in league play,” Pelphrey said of the blowout. “We haven’t had to deal with this. This is uncharted territory for us. We’ve led in five of the last six games we’ve played. We just have to play better.”

The Gamecocks went 6 6 for free throws in overtime, despite their reputation as the 11th worst team for free throws in the Southeastern Conference. With two seconds left in the game, Courtney Fortson fouled Devan Downey giving him the chance to score two points from the charity line, and win the game at 82 78.

Downey racked up a game high of 25 points for South Carolina.

“The positive we take from this game is we found a way to win, said USC coach Darrin Horn. Arkansas really fought. I give credit to (Arkansas coach) John (Pelphrey) and his kids. They continue to fight and play hard. But we found a way to win in a game when we weren t at our best. We had a lot of our guys step up, not only making shots but doing the little things in regulation.

Despite winning two non league games against big 12 teams, Oklahoma and Texas, they are having the worst conference season since 1971. The only team they’ve beaten in this year’s conference is Alabama’s Crimson Tide.

www.kfsm.com reports, “A disappointed John Pelphrey said, ‘There will come a time when people will congratulate us for winning a game. That time is coming soon. But I m tired of people consoling us with how well we played. The only reason they are doing that is because they beat us.’”
