Desanding cyclone is a pressure driven device used to separate two phases of different density. It is commonly used to remove solids and sand from water, condensate or gas streams. Small desanding cyclones are commonly made of ceramic material and large desanding cyclones are made of steel, for better resistance against erosion. Before understanding the factors affecting the selection of desanding cyclone, let us have a basic understanding of how a desanding cyclone works.

How a desanding cyclone works? The basic principle of working of a desanding cyclone is utilization of pressure energy to separate two phases of different density. The process of working of a desanding cyclone can be divided into three steps. At the first step, the feed containing solids is tangentially fed into the inlet stream of the desanding cyclone at high velocity. Here, it is moved in spiral motions in a cone shape container. Secondly, the cone creates acceleration which forces the solid particles to move to the outer wall of the cyclone. Because of the pressure energy, the remaining substance i.e. the water or oil or gas in the central area travels upwards for further processing.

Lastly, the solid is accumulated from the outer wall of the cyclone in the lower accumulator vessel. Through this three step process, the desanding cyclone separates solids from water, condensate or gas streams.
How to choose a desanding cyclone? Desanding cyclones have either single liner units or multiple liner configurations inside vessels. To choose the cyclone liner type and size, there are various factors to be considered. Some of them are listed below:

• Volume to be separated: The size of the desanding cyclone will depend upon how much volume of material is to be treated. Higher the volume to be treated bigger shall be the desanding cyclone and vice versa.

• Desired particle size to be removed: Desired particle size to be removed is an important factor to be considered while selecting a desanding cyclone. Normally, small diameter cyclones remove small particles and vice versa. The efficiency of the cyclone in removal of solid particles is largely dependent upon the size of the desanding cyclone.

•Temperature and viscosity of the liquid: It is imperative to consider the temperature and viscosity of liquid to choose the appropriate dasanding cyclone. Normally, higher temperature reduced viscosity or thickness of the liquid, which improves the separation process.

•Density of Solids and liquids: The density of solids and liquids to be separated is another factor to be considered while choosing the desanding cyclone as density reflects the potential of separation. It is easier to separate higher density solids than ones with smaller density. Thus, concentration of the substance to be treated is important in choosing the desanding cyclone. The substance to be treated may have various solids with varied densities to be separated from it. Typically there is one major component that needs maximum attention.

Pressure: Desanding cyclones use pressure energy for separation of solids from liquids. The available pressure or pressure drop to drive the cyclone shall be considered before making the final choice of the desander.
