It is extremely dangerous to have a dog sit on the car seat, as they are active and intelligent animals and would like to explore the car, and distract you. While some people throw the pet into the boot, this is cruel and inhumane, not to mention harmful to the pet. The best thing to do is to carry your buddy with you in a travel cage. Not only does the pet travel without any fuss, it is safe, and he will enjoy your company.
If you are planning a road trip, or if you are going camping, you need to invest in a travel crate that is sturdy and durable. There are many plastic ones which are usually specifically for Airline flight and are IATA approved. These are lightweight and durable. You can carry them with you; place them on the back seat of your car. They are very stable and, even if you slam the brakes hard, your pet does not get injured. Many dog cages come with a looped off area through which you can insert the car's seat belt so that your dog's cage is completely secured. While travelling to keep talking to your pet or sing along with the stereo so that the dog hears the sound of your voice and is reassured. If possible, place the crate somewhere where it can see you. Put some toys and a chewy bone in the cage so that the dog is busy through the journey.
Get the pet used to its travel cage much before the journey so that it is comfortable with the cage. Make regular stops so that the pet can stretch out its legs and relieve itself. A travel cage can be folded and carried to a hotel room where the dog can sleep. It can be set up at the camp too for the dog. It is a wonderful accessory to holidaying with your pet.
