Turning on the news at the begaining of the New Year has been always interesting, to say the least. Most often, astrology and horoscopes never make the headlines, but this year, things have been a little different. You may have heard about the recent rumors and buzz that you're suddenly not the sign of the zodiac that you have always been associated with and feel connected to. Do not worry, though, because you are still the zodiac sign you have always been, but there is a reason everyone is concerned and nervous. It all has to do with a little-known, neglected astrological sign called Ophiuchus.
Ophiuchus, a thirteenth constellation that has suddenly taken hold of the media recently, is the zodiac sign based off of the Greek god of healing, Asclepius. This particular sign falls between Scorpio and Sagittarius and is the sign of the Serpent Holder. The myth of Asclepius was that he helped a few baby snakes as a young man in Greece who then licked his ears so clean that he could hear the words of every creature on earth, making him the greatest healer to ever live and making him a god who valued serpents. For those who fall under this smaller sign, they have the attributes of being an interpreter, being lucky and a seeker of peace, and often have a desire to help others in either medicine or another civil profession.
Ophiuchus has been there since the Babylonian era when the zodiac was first officially nailed down, as it were, but we've never given it any notice because the Babylonians aligned their zodiac along where the sun fell in relation to the constellations. The window for Ophiuchus is only seven days, so therefore was not included.
The important thing to note is that you have not changed by this new knowledge, and neither has your sign. While the new zodiac sign will most likely see some attention in the future as people begin to identify with the sign, the fact is that if you use the tropical zodiac, which is the Western zodiac we all adhere to, then you won't see the change. Your sign is the same and is fixed to the seasons, not the sun.
If you're concerned that somehow your zodiac has changed and you will require a new sign, instead remind yourself that you are exactly the same person you were yesterday, Only wiser.
To be honest Astrologers who use the dates and positions dictated by Near Eastern astronomers hundreds of years before the Christian Era are well aware of it, and they don’t care. They’re not going to change the dates they use, and they’re not going to add a “13th sign” – Ophiuchus – to the Zodiac.
