What the home video producer has been able to come up with has changed a lot during the last ten years. The personal computers available to home users in the beginning of the 1990s, where nowhere near what is required to work with video. Today is a different story of course, as PCs capable of editing video more or less like the pro's do is available at affordable prices. Now let's have a brief look at video editing of today, from the viewpoint of the typical consumer.

A New Level Of Convenience

Non-linear editing is the term used for the process used by modern video editing software. What that implies is that all of the material is available all the time - end, beginning or somewhere in the middle - unlike the older (tape based) linear editing where you had to go to the specific location of a particular shot manually.

Non-linear editing benefits your work both in terms of speed an as far as picture quality is concerned. Whe tapes are used the content to be edited are transfered first to another tape and the to a master tape. In such a setup the audio and picture quality worsens with every copy, a process known as generation loss.

When editing in a non-linear system the quality is maintained, as what really happens is that the editing system calls up portions of the raw footage in the order you want them to appear

Computer Requirements

When it comes to editing video, particularly HD quality, there is no such thing as a "too powerful" computer. Nonetheless, provided that your PC isn't many years old, chances are that it can become a good platform to run video editing software on. A slightly older computer may also be brought up to par by upgrading critical components such as the processor and memory units.

Weather you prefer to edit video on a PC or a Macintosh is mostly a matter of personal preference these days, as newer incarnations of both plaforms are well up to the task.

A Private Cutting Room

How much you are willing to spend on hardware and software will naturally dictate what quality you will achieve in the end. If your video hobbe is mostly for personal use, satisfying your own eyes (and ears) is of course all that matters. On the other hand, a semi-professional approach requires that you are willing to spend a little bit more in order to get commercially viable quality in your work.

Nonetheless, as there is no video editing software capable of doing what was reserved only for professional movie people a few decades ago, and there really is not reason for buying a camera that records in SD any more, home video producers have never had it this good.
