Reading this article, one question must be on your mind, should I buy a personal alarm? To find your answer, it would help to imagine yourself alone in a grocery store parking lot at night. There a few people around, but not anyone near you.

You pull out your keys to unlock the door and as soon as you put the key in the lock a man in dark cloths steps out of the shadows, puts his hand over your mouth and and mutters a demand to give him your car.

If you had a personal alarm handy, you could pull the pin or push a button immediately distracting and startling your attacker, if not you're likely to become a victim of car theft or worse.

For your own personal safety and for the safety of those you love, it is always a good precaution to have one of these small alarms handy. They can give you good protection from criminals and even nature.

Keeping Your Adventurous Children Safe

Personal alarms are not just for frightening away assailants in case of a criminal attack. You can buy a personal alarm for your adventurous teenage or twenty-something son to give you a little piece of mind. Imagine helplessly standing by as your missing son is caught in a rock slide or avalanche unable to do anything to help locate him.

If your worst fear does happen, a personal alarm will alert other hikers, skiers, and rescuers as to the location of your loved one in case of a hiking, repelling, skiing, or snowboarding accident before it is to late to save him.

Added Safety for the Elderly

Personal Alarms are also good for the elderly. If your aged mother lives alone and would have trouble getting up if she fell, a personal alarm would sound loud enough to alert neighbors that she needs help.

Many seniors have fallen and broken delicate bones with no choice but to wait in pain for someone to find them. Having a personal alarm will assist your helplessly injured mother in getting the help she needs fast.

Types of Personal Alarms You Can Buy

In deciding on a personal alarm there are a few different types of devices to choose from. When you buy a personal alarm, consider what you need it for the most since many devices serve multiple purposes.

Which type you choose will depend largely on your unique needs. An electronic device is a good option for most, they are small and can serve multiple purposes. Many electronic devices are activated by pulling out an alarm pin by strap. Other types are activated by pushing a button.

Almost every electronic personal alarm had two or more functions. A Mace Sports Strobe, for example, has three. It will emit a flashing light and a loud sound when you pull the pin. A special attachment allows you to use it as a door or window alarm to alert you if an intruder tries to enter. There is also a setting that allows you to use the devise as a simple flashlight.

Another device is a flashlight and does not seem to be anything more, but when you pull the wrist strap, the pin is released and emits a loud sound.

You can buy a personal alarm that doubles as a door alarm. As a personal alarm it activates when the strap attached to the alarm pin is pulled. You can also hang this device over the knob of any non-metallic door, the device will activate instantly as soon as an intruder touches your door. These dual-alarms make good travel security for hotels, dorm rooms, and extra safety in threatening situations.

Not interested in electronic devices? There are also aerosol personal alarms that blare loudly when the top is pushed. You will never have to worry about batteries or if it will work after it gets wet. They do, however, have a limited life span of about 30 short blasts, and only function as an alarm.
