Did you know that over two million adults suffer from chemosensory disorders in the United States? On condition called Anosmia, has been linked to the use of a popular over-the-counter cold remedy called Zicam®. The makers of Zicam® swabs and nasal gel have voluntarily taken the products off the shelves. The makers of Zicam® are standing by their product, and asking the FDA to reconsider their public advisory that was issued on June 16, 2009.

How do you know if you have Anosmia?

Getting tested is pretty easy. A doctor will take a history from the patient and perform a physical examination, and can administer several different olfactory and taste tests. One popular test is a taste and spit test which uses various liquids that are salty, sweet, bitter, or sour flavors. Other tests include UPSIT tst or the Connecticut Chemosensory TEST. Some patients also undergo diagnostic testing with CT scans and MRIs.

How Much Do We Know About Anosmia?

There has been a lot of fantastic research done on this important topic. Things really started picking up in the 1970s, when the National Institute of Health started funding research centers to help better understand smell disorders. We all owe a debt of gratitude to the researchers doing this amazing work. One study is called “Loss of BBS proteins causes anosmia in humans and defects in olfactory cilia structure and function in the mouse” by Heather M Kulaga, Carmen C Leitch, Erica R Eichers, Jose L Badano, Alysa Lesemann, Bethan E Hoskins, James R Lupski, Philip L Beales, Randall R Reed & Nicholas Katsanis

Below is an exerpt:

“Defects in cilia are associated with several human disorders, including Kartagener syndrome, polycystic kidney disease, nephronophthisis and hydrocephalus. We proposed that the pleiotropic phenotype of Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS), which encompasses retinal degeneration, truncal obesity, renal and limb malformations and developmental delay, is due to dysfunction of basal bodies and cilia, . Here we show that individuals with BBS have partial or complete anosmia. To test whether this phenotype is caused by ciliary defects of olfactory sensory neurons, we examined mice with deletions of Bbs1 or Bbs4. Loss of function of either BBS protein affected the olfactory, but not the respiratory, epithelium, causing severe reduction of the ciliated border, disorganization of the dendritic microtubule network and trapping of olfactory ciliary proteins in dendrites and cell bodies. Our data indicate that BBS proteins have a role in the microtubule organization of mammalian ciliated cells and that anosmia might be a useful determinant of other pleiotropic disorders with a suspected ciliary involvement.”

If you found that excerpt interesting, you should consider reading the entire study.

If you believe that are suffering from Anosmia or Loss of Smell you should contact an attorney as soon as possible to discuss your legal options.
