Alternative Energy is important item of discussion on just about anyoneís mind today. It was only a year ago that half the population could stand up and say that they donít care as long as their car can get from A to B without a hassles, but as recent events continue to unfold, more and more people are now standing up against the use of fossil fuels if not for anything other than the fact that they can no longer even afford to drive their vehicle anywhere.

For the longest time, mankind has relied on the production of energy through the utilization of fossil fuels. However, in during the same time frame, there have also been many developments in the alternative energy fields. Back in the 1930ís the development of multiple hydro powered dams sprung up all across the United States as well as other countries. These are of course a form of alternative energy and have continuously provide the powering needs of the general public for more than a half of a century.

Alternative energy has always been around, and to be completely honest, these forms were here long before the use of fossil fuels. The main reason the fossil fuels became more popular was due to ease of production as well as lowered costs. Sure hydrogen powered cars are a great way to go, but the hydrogen needed to run the car takes electricity to produce and that electricity has to come from somewhere. On the other hand, fossil fuels are readily pumped out of the ground and can be used almost as soon as it leaves the earth with very little refinement needed.

As the years go by, many old ideas have and will continue to resurface as a means of creating power without using fossil fuels as a source. Items like wind power are becoming increasingly popular and many people all across the world are making their own wind generators to produce the power needed to perform a particular task in their home.

Even Nuclear power is considered to be an alternative and renewable energy source. The advancements in the production of power with the smallest amounts of waste have continued to increase over the last couple decades.

Another alternative energy concept that is growing in popularity is that of the harnessing of the sunís power. Solar power comes in two forms including that solar thermal as well as photovoltaic. The differences between the two are often made complicated, but it is actually quite simple. The rays of the sun comes in many different frequencies, some of these can be used in the form of light in the photovoltaic cells. On the other hand, some of these are in the form of heat such as that of Ultra Violet rays, these can be used in a solar thermal production. We would see more of these systems more readily available allover the world except for the major drawback associated with solar energy. The drawback of solar energy is that it can only be produced during the daytime because the storage of the heat can only be kept for short periods of time. The best thermal storage medium to date is that of a 60/40 mix of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate molten salt.
