You would think the promise of job security and high salaries would convince many people to join the medical profession. But many a college student fails to conquer the demanding medical training and surrenders after having spent a great deal of time and money chasing a goal that was found to be unattainable. If you are not 100% sure being a doctor is for you, you should stay clear of even attempting it. A student needs to have both a strong desire, as well as the necessary emotional qualities, to face the kind of competition found in medical schools.

A doctor at a community hospital recently commented he if he knew any young person considering a medical career, he would probably tell them just how much effort would be expected from them both in school and post graduate training as well. He went on to state that someone considering a medical career has to be totally certain that it is his true passion. Although the career is extremely well rewarded, there will be many things a student must sacrifice in order to succeed. Needless to say, there's always a great demand for doctors. According to this community hospital physician, his choice to become a doctor has been one that has always been rewarding, and he has not regretted it at any time.

It will take a staggering 9 years at the very least to become a doctor, medical school will take four years and you will spend at least one year in an internship. Certain specialists may spend up to five years in residency and, of course, the many years of education are monetarily challenging. However, a young person with a good medical degree has a wide variety of opportunities in medicine, since there will always be a hospital or practice somewhere that has a need for his particular medical skills. Opportunities in medicine include careers in research, private medicine, public health, and institutional medicine, to name a few. A female who is thinking of becoming a physician might learn that she is expected to compete with males, and that can be discouraging. Many women become frustrated with this fact, but it can have it's advantages in the field of medicine as well.

One doctor, who considers himself a family physician, describes his entry into a medical career was basically involuntarily in the beginning. His first experience in the medical world was when he was assigned to the medical corps for his six year stint in the Navy. There wasn't much choice, he said. But after he had worked side-by-side with physicians and nurses for six years, he knew that the medical profession was right for him. r.

There is a downside to being a doctor, and that is the long hours. The doctor says one of his greatest frustrations most of the time is not being able to spend enough time with his family. And while it would be difficult to nail down the actual amount of time he spends with his work, he estimated it's about 60 hours a week. Time is split between seeing patients in the hospital and dealing with the needs of people who he will see in his office each day. He is on call twenty-four hours a day. You may find yourself working for different industries including examinations, preventative medicines and treatment.

Earnings for a physician are dependent on the kind of work he does, and the amount of time he spends working. If you can handle the workload and become a doctor you will undoubtedly find yourself rewarded for your hard work. The family doctor said that he receives the greatest satisfaction when he is able to cure someone's illness, or make an unusual diagnosis and successfully treat the ailment.
