Hearing impairments in children grieve parents. How a child might communicate verbally could be permanently damaged by repeated interruptions that would take place during the first six months of his life. Infants need to receive auditory feedback if they are to learn the speech motor skills necessary for talking.

Indications of hearing difficulties include speech or language delay and change in voice quality. Among the most common risk factors associated with hearing loss is middle ear infection. A family history of hearing impairment or viral infection may also explain how a child can have hearing loss.

Those whose children suffer from middle ear infection repeatedly must consult a doctor regarding possible hearing impairment. This does not normally happen among children. But because the first six months of life involve important developmental changes, the American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Newborn and Infant Screening recommended that all newborns have screening before they reach one month old, with audiologic confirmation of significant hearing loss by the time they are three months old.

For those who didn't pass the first screening, a second screening is given to see whether the child needs to be observed by an audiologist or not. It is necessary for parents to go see the doctor if they missed the second screening or if they notice anything disturbing about their child's hearing, speech, or language.

If for any reason parents must change doctors, they must be faithful in giving to the new doctor their family histories. Pediatricians can answer any inquiries related to the importance of hearing to the development of your child. There are usually no lasting problems that come from hearing loss that is mild and temporary. In other cases, a medical caregiver may intervene in providing treatment for hearing loss.

Children with severe hearing loss may be aided by personal hearing devices to develop language proficiency. While toddlers accept a hearing device, they may sometimes find it uncomfortable. Parents must bear with a child's resistance. In serious cases with permanent hearing damage, parents will have to consider either learning sign language along with their child, or in appropriate cases, having a cochlear implant inserted into the middle ear to transmit sound waves.
