Mold is a fungus that generally builds up and destroys organic materials like books, papers, photographs, leather, wood, plastic, glass, etc. It establishes itself from spores floating in the air in our surroundings. Generally, these spores are not active, however they will start to germinate and reproduce when the humidity goes up above 70%. Temperatures that exceed 65 degrees are likely to grow molds. So, after a flood damages your home, one of the most important things you should do is to take necessary actions to avoid any further damages that will cause mold growth.

An active mold growth is slimy and fuzzy. It is usually green, orange, purple, or black in color while the inactive mold is powdery and white and can be white in color. In its early stage, it may just look like a web but in its full bloom it is kind of bushy. The spores can easily spread through the air, people and pets. This is why you must immediately prevent the things that can trigger mold.

So, how can you prevent the mold damage from spreading? First is to work and act fast. Remember that with the right conditions, it can grow and spread quickly. Next is to lower the temperature and humidity in the area. Keep in mind that mold canít grow in a low temperature and humidity. Open your windows if the humidity outside is much lower than the humidity inside; otherwise, just use your air-conditioning. Another good idea is to install dehumidifiers and just clean and empty them always. Next, if there are any objects infested by mold, isolate them. Dispose of moldy items that you will not use again and those objects that you want to save must be dried and frozen. Molds are deactivated when frozen. Last but not the least is to keep your home clean. Mold can be found hidden in your cupboards or shelves where your valuables are kept. Use Lysol on these surfaces to disinfect them from mold and then get enough ventilation into the area.

So, how can you save your belongings that are infested with molds? First is to dry them and isolate them from other items. Increase the circulation of the air using a fan, but do not directly aim it on the items. If the infested items are of large quantity or you just canít dry them immediately, you can freeze documents, small textiles, and books until they are in the right condition for drying. Moldy photographs must not be frozen. You can also expose these infested objects to sunlight but do not exceed 30 minutes in doing so. Only after the mold is inactive and dry, you should clean it by wiping it or brushing it away. Do it outside and always wear gloves, goggles and other protective clothing and a respirator.

Do not use harsh bleaching and cleaning products because they can further damage the objects. Also, never use a vacuum when cleaning fragile objects because it can break them. If you use a vacuum for other items besides fragile ones, use it outside since its exhaust will surely spread those mold spores. Hire a professional for repairing your moldy valuables to get the best result possible.
