Making A Fashion Splash With Ladies T Shirts

Has anyone else noticed that the humble t shirt is back at the top of the fashion hit parade? Early summer looks are rocking that old school 80s theme again: big slogans, big colours, big prints. Yes – ladies t shirts are back, and the more pop culture inspired they are, the better they’ll sell.
The iconic t shirt really took off in the 70s, when kids (that’s teenage “kids”) started wearing slogans, images of dead rock stars, the faces of famous political leaders and so forth on their chests so they could project a bit of external evidence for their convictions, interests and beliefs. And it’s back, finally, after a couple of decades thrust out into the wilderness by boring brand name rubbish. Naturally enough, the modern iconic shirt is now harking back to the 70s glory days of the originals: so the ladies t shirts we’ll be seeing on the urban catwalks this summer are all reminders of the bands, TV shows and politicos of the time. They’re also completely brilliant.
Take the boys and girls at My Icon, for example. They’ve managed to source a wealth of retro t shirt designs for their 2010 ladies’ range – from famous 80s film quotes (OK, so modern girls t shirts are harking back to the 80s, too) to iconic images from the worlds of pop, rock and politics. Expect to see femme fatales all over the country proudly trotting around in t shirts bearing the imagery of some of the films that created the consciousness of a whole generation. That generation is now, roughly, 35 – and ready to spend its summer bucks on recalling the innocence and fun of a time gone by. Ladies t shirts are going to make us all start thinking about those Polaroid tinted days of our childhood this year!
It’s funny to watch the increasing age band that fashion trends apply to. This current shift towards icon and slogan t shirts has captured the style imaginations of everyone from teenage girls (who happily wander around wearing t shirts that refer to shows and films they have never even heard of, let alone seen) to middle aged mums who were there for the first episode of most of them. Just goes to show that really good imagery never dies – which, of course, is why it’s called iconic. There’s a certain image of a certain South American revolutionary leader, whose red star and beret will be curving at the edges of ladies t shirts this year: we’ll all recognise him from the posters, films, album covers he’s been on and in over the last 20 years or so. Such a testament to the enduring power of the image is he that people recognise him even in silhouette – as they do with the more famous members of 60s and 70s rock bands and the profiles of super famous actors and actresses.
Why ladies t shirts have turned to these old images for inspiration, one isn’t sure. That they have, one finds delightful. It’s about time the modern habit of wearing brand logos got a bit of a kicking: and for it to be kicked by the shows and stars that made t shirts cool in the first place, all those years back, is poetic justice of the finest kind.
