Four Ways To KILL Your Own Ezine Promotion

Ezines, which are simply online or emailed newsletters, can be an amazing way to promoting you, your business or organization. But there is a right and wrong way to use Ezines for promotion. Today I’m going to look at four things that you definitely should not do if you are to use Ezine Promotion successfully:

1. Never ever use Ezine Promotions to Spam.

I am not sure why so many organizations seem to struggle on this one, but spamming is not just annoying for the recipient, it also does not work very well for the sender. I am constantly surprised by the number of organizations large and small who seem to think they can add me to their mailing list and Spam away.

Do not fall into this trap! Make sure that whoever your are emailing your Ezine to, get their permission first. Use Double-Opt-In which is also known as Confirmed Opt-In to ensure that your Ezine reader has not only given you their email address but has had to click on a link in an email to confirm that they definitely do want to receive your Ezine Promotions.

2. The second way to kill your Ezine is to only ever send out sales material.

Using your Ezine only for promotion will upset your readers and lead them to unsubscribe. In other words it is not a very productive use of your time or theirs. Instead you should aim to provide great value with your Ezine. This can be most easily achieved by providing great free information with suggestions that are genuinely helpful to your readers. Of course there is no harm in providing some free advice and then using your Ezine to promote a fuller version of that information in a paid version of a product that you are promoting. But avoid making your Ezine only an ad or promo tool.

3. Get your Ezine formatting right.

There is nothing more annoying than an Ezine that comes into your inbox promoting something or other, where the mail-merge has not quite worked out or the text looks corrupted in some way. A quick and easy way to kill your Ezine Promotion is to present it in an unprofessional or unreadable way. So double check the way it will look to your reader before you hit send.

4. Send the wrong Ezine Promotion to the wrong list.

It is quite possible that you will be running a number of different interest lists. Many of the autoresponders that handle Ezine Promotion allow you to set up an unlimited number of Ezines and one big mistake is to take a list of people who have say signed up to your information about fishing and inadvertently push out an Ezine Promotion about playing Bridge! The problem with misusing your Ezine Promotions in this way is that some folks will simply unsubscribe, while others will keep receiving your emails but with your credibility lessened may choose to ignore the content or emails entirely.

Ezines can provide a great way of promoting your business, but open-rates may be stubbornly low - so check how many people are opening your Ezine mailings (again this is a feature available in good Ezine send programs and autoresponders) and so how many people are actually taking notice of your Ezine Promotions. It is hard to give precise figures, but any open-rate as low as 10 or 15% indicates that you have a problem.
