An integrated services digital network is a set of communication standards for digitally transmitting data in the form of voice, videos and fax over the circuits of traditional public switched telephone line network. ISDN has wonderfully made it possible to use only one single line and set up multiple connections from it to transfer data, voice and such services without loosing the quality and speed.

ISDN elements-Integrated services digital network services refer to its capability to delivering more than one simultaneous connection and concurrently transfer any combination of data, voice and fax and all this without using multiple telephone lines. More than one line can be easily attached to the device and used as and when needed. This means that your all round communication needs can be taken care of by just deploying a single ISDN connection. It also comes with a promise of higher transmission rate.

Basic Rate Interface-the basic rate interface, a 128 kilobits service is delivered over a pair of the traditional copper wires. Is the entry level interface to ISDN. The actual 144 kilobit rate is broken into two B-channels of 64 kilobits and one single channel of 16 kilobits which is the signaling delta channel. Basic rate interface is also referred to as 2B+D sometimes. This interface specifically uses the following interfaces.

•The u-interface which is a two wire interface is between the exchange and the network terminating unit.

•The t-interface which a serial interface between a terminal adapter and a computing device.

•An s-interface or a four wire bus that ISDN consumer devices are plugged into.

•And lastly the r-interface which is the point between non-side device and terminal adapter.

BRI-ISDN is extremely popular in Europe but is much less common in North part of America. It is also quite used in Japan - where it is known by the name of INS64.

Primary Rate Interface-Another type of isdn service is the primary rate interface of the PRI which is carried over EI of 2048 kilobits in most parts of the world. It is broken into 30 B channels of 64 kilobits and one delta channel of 64 kilobits and a timing and alarm channel of 64 kilobits. It is very popular throughout the world especially for connection of PSTN circuits to PBXs

Data channel- the bearer data channel is of a standard 64 kilobit voice channel of 8 different bits sampled at an 8 kHz with G.711 encoding. These channels are also capable of carrying data since they are mere digital channels, one of which is called a DSO. Due to their traveling over RBS lines, some of them limit to 56k instead of 64 kilobits. This has become a less common possibility though it was very common in 20th century.

Signaling channel- it uses Q.931 for signaling the other side of the link.

X.25- carried over the B and D channels, it is used at many point–of–sale terminals as it minuses modem setup and simply connect to the central system

An integrated service digital network is alone capable of serving to all your communication needs without requiring purchase of multiple phone connections and is therefore an innovation much required.
