If you have trouble falling asleep each night, you are not the only one with such a problem. It is estimated that 60 million people suffer from different sleep disorders in the US alone. And in the majority of cases these sleep disorders are chronic if not severe, while only 30% can be classified as mild and transient sleep disorders.

One of the most common types of sleep disorder is insomnia. Individuals that find that they are unable to fall asleep after half an hour or so on a regular basis or cannot go back to sleep after waking up may be suffering from insomnia. Although insomnia is not life-threatening, it can lead to serious health complications and even mental disorders. Individuals that do not receive a sufficient amount of sleep may end up feeling stressed, depressed and anxious. Insomnia is often caused by anxiety over an upcoming event, such as exams or work.

Another common sleep disorder is sleep apnea. This disorder occurs when an individual takes short pauses in breathing during sleep. If left untreated, the disorder can cause a number of serious health complications and can even be life-threatening. Those who have suffered brain tumours or strokes are more susceptible to sleep apnea. The condition can also affect those who are overweight. Those who develop Obstructive Sleep Apnea will need to be treated as soon as possible, as they are at more risk of suffering a stroke.

An individual's lifestyle can cause certain sleep disorders to occur. Insomnia and sleep apnea can occur as a result of an individual leading an unhealthy lifestyle. Those who are overweight or have lots of caffeine or alcohol are more likely to suffer from sleep apnea or insomnia. Eating heavy meals before bed can also lead to sleep problems.

Some sleep disorders are not dangerous in themselves, but can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. Sleep deprivation can lead to lack of motivation and lower concentration, which may result in an individual not receiving enough exercise during the day. This can lead to weight gain, which causes further health complications.

The first group of disorders is also known as insomnia. This problem is quite common in occasional forms, as stress and fatigue from daily activities can result in lack of sleep the night after, and many people go through that on a regular basis. However, if the problem persists and lasts to be permanent, it is a cause of serious concern. Not getting enough sleep affects the overall condition of the body and mind, and will surely affect your everyday activities.
