Many of us use our wool rugs for convenience and warmth in our houses. They are an inexpensive way of brightening up our homes and making them more welcoming. However they can be used as a valuable aid to the designer look you have always wanted in your house. With makeover shows on television and more and more magazines offering design articles, interior design has never been more popular. Interior design is expensive and time consuming when you are fitting out a whole room and it is important to take every aspect into consideration.

Firstly choose your colour scheme. Put your most expensive items into place first and then work round these. This will usually be your seating arrangements, whether it is a large sofa or two, or a selection of chairs. Sofas now come in many colours and patterns so choose the one which appeals to your own personal taste. The next step will be to choose the wall covering. To avoid the room looking too overpowering use a plain wall if your sofa is patterned, and go for a patterned wallpaper if your seating is plain. You are then ready to look at your flooring. Most people today go for either wood or laminate flooring, or a plain carpet, and then use wool rugs as an addition .As wool rugs are very versatile they can complement patterns on your walls or furniture to pick up the tone of your room.

You can use your wool rugs to create a theme in your living room. Remember this is the main area in your house and it is where most of your visitors will be entertained at some point. So your living room needs to make a statement about you. Popular at the moment are rugs with particular designs on them, such as the union jack rugs. These can show the nation's flag in subtle colours which can easily enhance plain furniture, such as a black leather sofa.

Another popular idea is to use nature as a theme. Many sumptuous wool rugs come with floral or leafy patterns which look good teamed with a green or sunshine yellow based background and a brown toned sofa to create a harmonious living area where you and your friends can relax. This gives a traditional look to your house, but the nature look can be updated by the floral or leaf design you choose. Rather than the traditional pictorial representation, you can opt for a more innovative design such as block printed autumn leaves or swirls of exotic black and white flowers, which will enhance any decor.

An interior design look which is both inventive and colourful is to use abstract patterns on both your walls and your wool rugs. Choose your wall coverings first , then find the perfect wool rugs to tone in as with the wide range of colours and abstract styles available in wool rugs this is usually the easier way round. With circles, squares and swirls in a myriad of colours, you will be spoilt for choice.
