The growing concern about the environment has raised the issue in many peoples mind as to whether wood burning stoves are eco-friendly. Well, the answer to this depends largely upon the stove you are using. The old pot-belly stoves were not environment-friendly. But today’s wood burning stoves are being made with fuel economy in mind and are designed to do the least damage to the atmosphere.

These modern wood burning stoves are one of the greenest sources of warmth to have at your fireside. Let’s see how these stoves first came to existence.
Well, the wood burning stoves have been used for many years by the home owners across the UK and Europe. But in the beginning of the last century these stoves did not meet up to the expectations of their users. They were producing too much smoke and were not efficient. However the design of wood burning stoves as existed then has undergone a revolutionary change.

In the 1990 the increasing concern to protect the environment led a steep decline in the use of coal and oil as a source of energy. The awareness towards energy and self-sufficiency saw most people taking a turn towards wood as a source of energy. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enumerated standards that were to be met by the newly designed stove in order to be kind to the environment.

New designs of wood burning stoves came in the market that adhered to these standards. These stoves produced a very little ash and smoke. Their fuel efficiency was increased to 33 % and emission was reduced by 90%.

Thus these modern wood burning stoves burn less fuel to produce greater energy. You may say that the wood burning stoves like oil stoves or coal stoves also release pollutant in the air in the form of carbon dioxide. The answer is yes, but the difference lies in the amount. Coal and other fossil fuels release unhealthy levels of carbon dioxide in the air. But the wood burning stoves produces only as much carbon as what is required by the plant to go into a tree from where the wood has been secured. The same process takes place when a tree dies thereby leaving the carbon in the air that it took to grow. So it is a natural cycle. And wood is a renewable source of energy.

These wood burning stoves are kinder to environment when compared to stoves that run on oil or coal. The best thing about using wood as fuel is that they do not deprive the earth from non-renewable source of energy.

If you want to buy a wood burning stove to make your house warm then you can do so from online stores and traditional stores also. These stoves are available in various size, shapes, budgets matching different home décor. Buying online has many advantages as you can buy any time from the comfort of your own home with just a few clicks of a mouse. You can also get discounts by buying online as well as special offers if you purchase out of season.
