Over the years we have seen tons of classic fights between great fighters. These fights are remembered by their different names depending on the events that happen. Some have to do with a single blow that knocked out their opponents and others talk about fights that went round after round as each fighter endured the blows that their opponents threw forward. While there are tons of great stories and tons of names that describe these fights, only one fight is remembered today as “The battle of the Century.”

The battle of the century took place between two of the great fighters of the 1920s. The fight was between Jack Dempsey and the Frenchman named George Carpentier. The fight was held in New Jersey and the fight apparently was as popular of a fight as had ever taken place up to that point. The attendance for the big fight totaled more than 80 thousand people. While the attendance said it was just 80 thousand people, many people have born record that the stands were built to accommodate more than 90 thousand people and that they were filled to their maximum capacity. The fight was reported to gross more than 1.7 million dollars. While that is certainly not a large figure in terms of dollars when you consider the amount that fights gross today, if you compare it to the value of a dollar at that time, it is tremendous. The fight grossed more than twice the total of the next largest fight of all time previous to the event.

The fight was between two characters that could not have been any more different. One was known as a war hero. Carpentier served his country with all of his heart. He was previously in the air force and was a popular figure. On the other hand, Dempsey was not a noble war hero at all. He was known as one of the men that dodged the draft and continued to box while his fellow Americans were fighting during the war.

The fight was on an 18 foot ring. The two fighters took offense at each other early on. Dempsey was particularly angry because Carpentier received a large share of cheering and Dempsey thought that he deserved the cheers in the states. The fight started at 3:16 in the afternoon. The fight went on for a few rounds, but it was clear that Dempsey was the one in control. In the 4th round Dempsey really made his move and put out Carpentier. Carpentier was knocked unconscious and could no longer get up. The fight was over a mere 11 minutes after the fighters started.

While it was called the battle of the century, it was not nearly what everyone expected. It was mostly an event that was well publicized and overhyped. Despite the poor performance from Carpentier, it was a fight that helped the sport grow to become a sport that attracted more attention and more money. It also brought attention to the New Jersey area.
