Traveling to a destination can be as much a part of the enjoyment of a trip as the destination. Of course, much of the enjoyment depends on the time, cost and mode of travel. For those wanting a leisurely trip without the stress of airports or highways, two alternate methods are the bus and the train.

Buses have become more popular as a means of travel. Besides being a much more comfortable method of travel than an automobile or airplane, buses pass through many cities in the U.S., so a bus terminal is probably much closer than an airport. New, more fuel-efficient buses with roomier seats and aisles allow the passengers to relax and enjoy the scenery while being confident that they are traveling in a safe and eco-friendly manner. Amenities such as Internet access and electrical outlets have also been added.

Buses have been re-engineered to be more environmentally friendly by reducing their carbon dioxide emissions nearly threefold. Bus fare can be more economical than airfare, but distance and schedule dates are the determining factors. If a trip can be scheduled sufficiently far in advance, airfare is sometimes less expensive. However, bus terminals do not require the invasive and time-consuming security precautions that are now mandatory at commercial airports. The baggage restrictions and overage fees are also considerably less on buses than on airlines, and there are few liquid prohibitions on buses.

Trains have also experienced a resurgence of popularity as a means of long distance travel, particularly with the long security lines and restrictions at the airports. Trains can be one of the most luxurious ways to travel to a destination. Overnight trains still boast full service dining cars with silverware and china, as well as bedroom suites complete with private bath, linen service and personal service, and the daily newspaper. Also, meals are included in the fare for overnight travel.

Amtrak's policy of two carry-on and three checked baggage items are more generous baggage allowances than airlines allow; there are no liquid restrictions such as those on airlines although there are some size and weight limitations. Many trains offer seasonal entertainment, and of course, the freedom to move around the train at will and use electronic devices. Amtrak trains are much more eco-friendly than previously, being 20% more efficient than air travel and 30% more efficient than auto travel.

So if time is not a constraining factor, either the train or the bus is a more relaxing and enjoyable alternative than either flying or driving, in addition to being more ecologically efficient.

Author's Resource Box

Even though railroad construction has slowed in recent years, almost any destination you can imagine can be reached by train. While the train might not stop right at your hotel, most destinations are in easy reach of a train station.
