Assertiveness is a way for asking for your rights that is neither aggressive nor passive.
Suppose that someone took your turn in a queue what will happen if:

• You shouted at him and asked him to step back: The man will become angry and his ego might force him to start a fight with you
• You didn’t do anything: you will become frustrated and feel bad

Assertiveness is way that can allow you to ask for your rights without becoming furious nor passive.

These are your rights, know them well
If you want to become assertive then you first need to know what are your rights in order to know when is the time for defending them, here are the rights of a typical assertive person:

• You have the right to have your own values, beliefs, opinions, and emotions: You have the right to express them freely as long as expressing them doesn’t violate the rights of others
• You have the right not to justify or explain your actions to others: those who are not concerned (not your boss for example)
• You have the right to tell others how you wish to be treated: if someone is treating you in a way that you don’t like then you must ask him to stop
• You have the right to express yourself and to say, "No," "I don't know," "I don't understand" or even "I don't care." : people who aren’t assertive fear to say no and every request from people becomes an obligation from them even if they really didn’t have time
• You have the right to take the time you need to formulate your ideas before expressing them: no one has the right to force you to make decisions quickly (sales men for example)
• You have the right to make mistakes: some people feel to make mistakes or believe that mistakes make them inferior. This is wrong, assertive people know that making mistakes is a part of human nature
• You have the right to stand up for yourself and for what you want: of course!!
• You have the right to be treated with respect: people don’t have the right to disrespect you provided that you don’t disrespect them

Before learning how to become assertive you first need to believe in the previous lines and you also need to add them to your confidence journal so that they become part of your belief system.

What will happen to you if you didn’t become assertive?
Any person in this world including non assertive people feel angry when their rights get violated. This anger has powerful energy and must be channelled somehow.

Assertive people channel their anger correctly by standing up for their rights while non assertive people carry the anger inside them.

One of depression’s most famous definition is anger turned inwards. If someone kept turning his anger at himself instead of turning it to others he will become depressed for sure.

While I was giving a lecture one day about self confidence one of the people asked me what about forgiveness? Would it result in stored anger

My answer was:
If you had the power to take your right back but you forgave the person then certainly that won’t leave any bad effect but if the world wrestling champion kicked you and then you said I will forgive him because I am kind person then your subconscious mind wont believe you.

In short, forgiveness only works when you are sure that you can take your right back.
