The current mood you are experiencing is the resultant of the past events you have been through, the present moment and your future expectations.
Lets suppose that you had a horrible breakup 2 days ago, most probably the effect of the breakup will still be affecting your mood right now.
But what if you were expecting the breakup to happen 2 days from now? Wont you still fee bad? Yes you will, in such a case you will feel really worried and you wont be able to enjoy your present moment.
Just as you saw worrying can kill happiness, prevent you from enjoying the present and make your life miserable.
So how can you get over worrying?
1) Avoid whatever makes you worry if possible: lets suppose that you found that you worry about the future whenever you watch economic news. If watching such news isn’t important for you or if you don’t need it to do your job or daily tasks then simply stop it. One of the best ways to get over worrying is to avoid the sources that can make you worried if possible. That should be your first defense line against worrying.
2) Remind yourself of the bad expectations that never happened: what if you mistakenly watched the news and then started to worry about losing your job? In such a case you should remind yourself of the times where you worried about things that never happened. The best way to do so is write what I call the worrying sheet which is a sheet that contains all the days you felt really worried then nothing bad happened in the end. Whenever you look at this sheet you will be able to think more realistically.
3) Stop seeking more evidence: when a person starts worrying about something he usually starts to look for more evidence in order to calm himself. The problem is that when you are thinking using a certain mindset you will only see things negatively and the way you collect evidence will become biased. You will ignore positive facts and you will only focus on negative ones and as a result you will worry much more.
4) Think long term: The more you think with a short term mindset the more you will worry. Lets suppose you are watering a plant. If each 5 minutes you kept checking whether its growing or not you will certainly become worried about its future. If on the other hand you watered it without minding to measure its length then each month you measured it you will find that its growing and you won’t worry.
5) Have a backup plan: if all you had was 10 dollars and you didn’t find them in your first pocket then you will feel really worried but if you knew you had another 100 dollars in the other pocket you wont be that worried. Having a backup plan is one of the best methods that can help you get over worrying.
