The latest version of Microsoft’s phone platform has been announced and the version number has gone up again. We’re now at ‘8’ and no sign of a dessert based naming system, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Windows Phone 8 builds on the previous iterations (7 and 7.5) but will bring the mobile OS more in line with Microsoft’s new desktop OS - Windows 8. It will let developers quickly create mobile apps by sharing code with the desktop and tablet variants, including Microsoft’s recently launched tablet ‘Surface’.

The new operating system will be available in new handsets from Samsung, HTC, Nokia and Huawei later this year. Unfortunately for existing Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 users Microsoft has said the new OS will only be available on the new handsets – older devices can’t be updated. This isn’t going to go down well will anyone who’s just purchased the recent flagship device, the Nokia Lumia 900. I don’t think it will apply to future devices and OS’s but it doesn’t inspire confidence if you have the niggling feeling you’re shiny new smartphone won’t get the latest updates.

Overall Windows Phone positioning has been confusing for business. With social media centric tiles such as Facebook and Twitter, many have shied away and not taken the time to appreciate the value of Exchange and Office integration. The tie-in with the desktop and tablet may contribute to the appeal but I believe businesses will be reserving judgement until they’ve had time to test.

Video chat technology such as Skype will be available to run in the background of the new OS and it will include a ‘Wallet’ application tied to Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow contact payment services.

An improved dual-core processor should provide a richer video experience on handsets but with a focus on mobile performance to assist with battery life.

Handsets featuring NFC and Skype calling should be available from Samsung, Nokia, HTC and Huawei in Q4. I’ll do a more complete review when they’re available.
