A temporary shelter outdoors consisting of fabric sheets or draping material is referred as a Tent. This temporary shelter is attached with a rope or frame of poles supporting it to stand freely. Large tents are fastened using guy wires or guy ropes to the pegs of the tents or stakes whereas tents smaller in sizes are affixed to the ground or are free standing.

Uses of tents

The nomadic people first used tents as their portable homes and now tents are used mostly for temporary shelters in remote places and also in disaster prone areas, recreational camping, for circus, exhibitions, weddings, festivals backyard parties and also for major corporate events, industrial shelters and excavation covers. Tents are used by the armies’ all over world. Tents are traditional shelters used by armies because these are quicker to take down and set up during the times of emergencies. During war, fire, earthquake and other natural calamities tents are used as temporary shelters. Tents also play a significant role in protest movements as these are used for symbols and sites of protests.

Different Parts of Tents

The tents mainly have 3 types of basic configurations which include:

1. Double wall or double skin - the outer wall of the tents is extended to the ground on all sides and is a waterproof layer. The inner tents are used for sleeping purposes. The inner tents are smaller than the outer ones so that the sleeping area is totally separated and covered from the living area. The inner tents allow water vapor and are not waterproof which provides with condensation on the outer portion. These types of walls offer thermal insulation. The structural wall that carries the pole is always affixed at first.

2. Single wall using flysheet - the flysheet is waterproof which is clear and suspended on the tents roofs’. These flysheets never extend on the ends and the sides of the tents but sometimes overlap the roofs.

3. Single wall or single skin - the fabric used consists of waterproof layer so that condensation is minimized inside the tents.

There are various important components of a Tent other than the various types of walls, flysheet, inner and outer tents which include-

1. Poles - used for the support of the structure which are made of metal, wood, fiberglass etc.

2. Groundsheet – used between the sleeping bag and ground for providing a barrier.

3. Air vents- used to reduce condensation and to breathe fresh and cold air.

4. Stakes- used for fastening the tents to the ground.

All types of information on tents are available in various websites. People interested in these can browse through these websites.
