Global advertising & marketing agency thrives in local University business village

The agency, now based at Lichfield Business Village in Staffordshire University’s Friary campus, has grown from nothing to become a significant global marketing agency thanks to the help of Lichfield Business Village.

“AdStorm moved to the business village having only a handful of local customers” commented Business Village Manager Joe Rutherford. “But now when I drop in to their office I see projects for household name blue-chip brands such as GlaxoSmithKline, Lawson Software, Paul McKenna Training and the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.”

“Like many marketing agencies we initially traded from an improvised room in one of the directors’ homes. But wanting to reclaim my home from the company, and also with the expectation of some valuable networking opportunities, we decided to move into commercial premises where we would be surrounded by other businesses.

“We selected the business village because it provided everything we needed in a convenient package without having to commit to a long-term lease.”

The AdStorm advertising agency quickly networked with other companies in the village, learning valuable online marketing skills from ASAP Ventures, developing websites and brochures for Alderstone Estates, Thornton Projects Limited and Douglas Jackson, and finding subcontractors from within the University such as Red Spider Web Solutions. Robert Frost added “The environment is ideal for fostering co-operation with other businesses. Doug Scott from ASAP Ventures was particularly keen to share his expertise in search engine marketing with us. In fact, 6 months after moving in, thanks in part to our new centre of excellence for online advertising and Internet marketing, we outgrew our room and had to move again – to a larger one. Here again the flexibility of the business village proved its value.”

Joe Rutherford commented, “The business village has developed a reputation for attracting attractive innovative and fast-growing companies such as AdStorm. I’ve known the Frost brothers who run the company since I taught them Geography at school as young boys. Clearly they were paying more attention in their lessons than I thought at the time.”
