Treating Allergies and Understanding Them

By: Dorothy Medlum

More than 20% of the adults and children in the United States are affected by allergies, bringing the total to millions being affected yearly. Depending on the source of the reaction, allergies can affect people at different seasons as well as different times of their lives.

There are various sources of these maladies. Pollen, dust mites, food, and mold may be the very sources that bring the reaction to you.

Parents who have suffered from allergies may have passed this on to their children, since allergies can be inherited. This does not mean, however; that you will be plagued by the same allergies. It means the tendency to have an allergy is stronger for the child, if the parent has had one. When the immune system is weak, a reaction to a specific substance may be greater.

In general, allergies are inherited. If either parent or both had allergies, then we may have them too. However, just because dad had an allergy to mold, doesn't mean your allergy will also be to mold. It does mean that you will stand a far greater chance of having some type of allergy, because dad had one.

Another reason for having an allergic reaction may be due to your weakened immune system. If you have had the flu or you are pregnant, you may develop sensitivity to a substance you wouldn't otherwise be affected by.

Allergies are the result of our body's way of dealing with different substances. Your immune system may react as though pollen or mold is harmful to you. When sneezing, watery eyes, hives, or runny noses appear, you are having a reaction to this substance.

During a severe reaction, called anaphylaxis, your itching may turn to swelling, pain, and vomiting. If this happens seek immediate attention.

If all these methods fail, you may have to take shots or seek your doctor's advice on a method that may be just right for you.
